Classwork 3:
To get 3 objects, one from the field of ART, CRAFT and DESIGN.
Objective: To clear our misconceptions of what defines art, craft and design and how there is no clear distinction as the lines between all three categories are blurry.
Theme: Daily Influence of Art, Craft and Design.
Art: Going with my theme, I got a doodle made by my friend. A doodle is something so basic, you find it in the last page of every student's notebook. yet, it is called art. Art is self expression, thus a doodle is a piece of art.
Characteristics of Art:
Characteristics of Art:
- Self Expression
- Emotional Bond
- Communication is between artist and viewer
- It is the oldest in comparison to craft and design. Eg: Cave Paintings
- One off piece
- Open to interpretation
- not functional
Craft: Something as simple as the paper planes we made as kids from old paper is also considered craft. Origami is a Japanese craft of folding paper to create various forms. This is symbolic due to how each and everyone of us have learnt it from our friends, thus showcasing the key feature of craft: Cultural.
Characteristics of Craft:
- Decorative and functional purpose
- hand made
- culture based
- tangible
- Not older than art but older than design.
- Not Mass produced
- Definitive interpretation
- Closed loop between the visualizer and the producer.
Design: Unlike primitive man, we rely less on nature and more on design. We fight nature and other uncontrollable situations with design. The Umbrella is the best example. It was made to serve a purpose and thus it explains that design is always functional.
Characteristics of Design:
- It is a Service
- Problem Solving
- New concept
- Mass Produced
- it is the most objective and definitive in comparison to art and craft.
- Most Functional
- Open loop between artist and viewer.
